HYMNS 201–202 · RISEN DOUGH RECORDS

Glazed and Forgiven

1996 · Risen Dough Records · 2 tracks

Second album. Twelve tracks, longer songs, heavier dynamics. The title track features Donna's first recorded scream and Carol Ann's most celebrated double-kick passage — 32 bars at 172 BPM, described by one reviewer as "theologically load-bearing." Reviewed by a secular publication as "either the most sincere or most absurd thing we have heard this year." Gerald said it was both. The publication did not publish this clarification.

    Words
    Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem
Morning comes down easy on the street
I have walked this sidewalk since my childhood
I know every door I am about to meet
There is a store where the sign comes on at daybreak
There is a name printed above the door
And the city where the first one opened in thirty-seven
Is the city where I learned what the morning was for

    The heat transforms
    The timing matters
    The window closes
    Patterson Avenue
    The heat transforms
    The timing matters
    The window closes
    Patterson Avenue

I work at a bakery on the west side
Different door different sign different street
But the oven opens at four in the morning
And the dough comes up to meet the heat
The glaze goes on while the bread is singing
The window opens and the window closes
Gerald says this is also how grace works
I say it is also how baking works
    Both

    The heat transforms
    The timing matters
    The window closes
    Patterson Avenue
    The heat transforms
    The timing matters
    The window closes
    Patterson Avenue

    One town, two doors
    Same heat, two hands
    One city, one morning
    Both correct, both correct

Sister Ada Glaze in nineteen and thirty-seven
Brought the recipe into this town
Set the ovens up on South Main Street
And the smell of the glaze came rolling down
Patterson Avenue is not the only street
But it is the one where I learned the name
    Winston-Salem is a working city
And the working and the worship are the same

    The heat transforms
    The heat transforms
    The timing matters
    The timing matters
    The window closes
    The window closes
    Patterson Avenue
